While I’m on the Apple Theme this week, I decided to make some new coasters for the table. They were surprisingly easy to make. The thing that made them a little long was waiting for the paint to dry.
And this is how I made them:
I started off with some wooden apple shapes that I’d found at Michaels. I painted the edges first & then the body of the apple shape with ‘Apple Red’ acrylic paint.
Once the red paint had dried, using a dark brown paint, I painted in the stems of the apples.
After the stems had dried I painted the leaves with a hunter green acrylic paint. Then I added a small curved black line under the stem area to give it a little depth. Once all of that had dried, I added some white paint to the side of the apple, the side of the stem & the top of the leaf to give it a little high-lighting.
Once it had completely dried, I did the other side, putting in the highlighting on the opposite side.
I wanted to seal them, but I wasn’t sure that clear spray paint would hold up to the condensation that a glass might have, so I used Minwax Polyurethane in Clear Satin.
After I’d put the first coat on, I was a little nervous. It looked way too shiny for what I wanted.
But as it dried, the polyurethane dried with the satin finish that I was looking for. I added a second coat & then repeated for the other side.
Like I said, the longest time for making these is waiting for the paints to dry. There are so many wooden shapes available. I’m looking forward to making some others in the near future.
Happy Creating everyone!
