I’ve been making these little Bad Hair Day Pencils for years. They are easy enough for children to make, make cute additions to Valentine’s Day parties or an Easter Basket, and can keep the little ones busy for a long time. They’ll also bring a smile to your face in your home office.
When I showed this to my 22 year old son, I asked him if he remembers them. He smiled & said, “Yes, I still have one”. Needless to say, that made my day!
What you’ll need:
Holiday Pencils (Dollar Store)
Long Hair Craft Fur
Wiggle Eyes
Tacky Glue
Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks (with supervision)
Rubber bands if you’re not using hot glue (to hold the fur while drying)
Ribbon (to match the holiday pencils)
Scissors
Ruler & Pencil to mark fur
Mark the back of the craft fur 1″ high by 2″ wide. Cut the back of the fabric. Don’t cut into the fur, just the backing, so that the fur remains long.
Make sure that the fur’s grain is facing towards the top. Add some hot glue one side of the fur. (this is the grown up part) Press the eraser end of the pencil into the hot glue about 1/2″ down from the top.
Add some tacky glue to the back of the fur. Roll the pencil up & add a thin line of hot glue to the opposite end. Hold in place until the hot glue dries.
Make sure that when you place your pencil, that it’s down far enough that the eraser doesn’t show.
Cut a piece of ribbon 12″ long. Add a dab of hot glue to the bottom of the craft fur & press the ribbon onto it. Wrap the ribbon around the pencil & bring it back up to the front. Tie the ribbon in a double knot.
Tie a bow with the ends of the ribbon. Cut off the excess ends of the ribbon. Apply some tacky glue to the back of the wiggle eyes. Add them to the fur, just above the ribbon.

Smooth the hair upwards & they looks cute. But when you twist the pencil between your hands, the hair goes wild.
They’re unique gifts & the little ones love them! (heck, I love them) They’ll spend so much time twisting the pencils between their hands just to watch the hair go crazy.
Happy Creating everyone!
