Organizing Christmas Ornaments

I’ve finally finished up my Christmas ornament re-organizing.  It’s something that I’ve been wanting to do for a while now.  The ornaments are kept in our barn (which is actually a glorified, large, 2 story shed).  Although the things that are stored in there stay dry, they are subject to heat & cold.  The usual labels on the boxes don’t hold up well.  They’ve buckled & faded over the years.  This year, it will be different.

Organizing Earrings

I thought I’d show you how I organize my earrings.  I’ve seen them organized online using framed screens, egg cartons, and even storing them on trays, but that drives me nuts.  All it takes is bumping it once & you have a huge mess that can take hours to reorganize.  And I really don’t have all that much room to store my earrings like that.  If you read my post on Makeup Storage, you know that I like to have all of things close together, so that when I’m getting ready, I don’t have to run all over the place.  Once my make-up is on, and my hair is done, the last things I put on are my earrings & watch, and I’m out the door.  It’s like a one stop shop.

How do you take all of this and store it in a section that’s 5″ wide, 7″ deep, and 6″ high?

Once I thought it out, it was actually easy.

Makeup Storage

I’ve been going through a lot of things lately.  I’m trying to pare down what I have, and reorganizing what I keep.  This time, it’s my make-up that I’m reorganizing & purging.  Where do you keep your face?  Some keep theirs in a make-up bag, some on a tray, and the Beatles said that Eleanor Rigby kept her face in a jar by the door.  I keep mine in drawers.

Make-up Storage Finished Drawers

I’ve found that by keeping my make-up separated in different drawers, I seem to get ready a little more easily.  But it’s been awhile since I’ve gone through any of it, or bothered to clean out the drawers.  Frankly, they were a mess.

Cleaning Make-up Brushes

It’s amazing all the things that a woman has to use just to look feminine.  One of those things are the make-up brushes.  The right brush can do wonders for putting on your make-up.  But when they’re dirty & loaded with old make-up, they just make getting ready harder.  They can get so dirty, so quickly.  And using dirty brushes on your face will only end up hurting your skin.  They trap bacteria & dirt.  This is something that I don’t want to do to my skin.  So a regular cleaning of the brushes is something that I try to do once a week. And it’s easier to do than you think.

Desk Drawer Overhaul/Reorganization

Lately, I’ve been reorganizing things in our home.  I’ve been trying to do one section of a room a day/week.  It’s amazing how things can get out of hand if you don’t stay on top of them.  My office desk drawers did just that.  I’m in those drawers constantly.  It not only houses my pens, post-it notes, computer vacuum attachments & stationary, but my camera battery charger & the equipment I need for uploading my pictures.

Desk Drawer Overhaul

I realized that I was stuffing the cords to my camera supplies into the drawer before I closed it.  That’s a good way to ruin them.

Sewing Room Upper Cabinet Re-Do

The sewing room is coming along.  There’s a new addition to the room that gives me even more storage. (which in a 6′ x 7′ room, you need storage)

We got this upper cabinet from my mother-in-law.  (Her neighbor had given it to her when the redid their kitchen)  It was in good shape.  Although it only had one door, but that is fine.  It just needed a little ‘Creatively Sams’ added to it.

Here it is, before & after:

Wooden Desk Organizer

I found this little wooden desk organizer at the local thrift shop about 6 months ago.  I put it on our bookcase, on our desk, in the craft room, & back on the bookcase.  It just didn’t fit our decor.  But what to do with it?  I liked it, but brown wood just doesn’t fit in our home.  It was sitting on my desk, and I was just staring at it.  I knew it would come to me, eventually.  Then it hit me.  It needed painted…. and mirrors.  This is the before & the after.

The Crafting Side of my Sewing/Craft Room Re-Do

Here’s another peek into my world.  Like I’ve said before, this is a very tiny room.  It’s only 6′ x 7′.  In order for me to get everything into this room, it has to be organized.  The room is divided into 2 main sections.  One side of the room is for sewing, and the other side is for my crafting.  This is the crafting section of the room. It’s still a work in progress.  I’m still searching for the right cabinet or shelving unit for the left side of the window.

Crafting Cabinets Organization

Each payday, I would buy another piece for the room.  I knew what I wanted, but I knew that if I wanted to finish the room without it emptying my bank account, it would take some planning in advance.  I went with items from ClosetMaid.  Continue reading

DIY Memo Boards

As I’ve said before, I’m a very visual person.  And I’m always getting ideas for new projects.  I have a huge stack of index cards, full of ideas.  But they’re filed away in a file box.  I’ve found that when I have an idea that I want to get started on right away, putting the index card on a memo board keeps me on track.  When the idea is filed away in it’s ‘proper place’, I can forget about it. Because of that, I’ve made 2 memo boards.  One by the sewing machine, (this one has a side that is metal to use magnets & the right hand side is cork)  and one by the crafting area of my room (all cork).  Besides that, plain brown cork just doesn’t go in my sewing room.

And I’m not a fan of brown.  Purple or lilac is what it had to be to go in my sewing room. (Remember, this is for my room.  You can chose any color that goes in your home)

This is how I made them. Continue reading
