DIY Earring Jackets

I love wearing simple earring posts.  They’re unobtrusive & can be worn for any occasion.  I have my favorites that I wear very often, but sometimes I think that they need a little ‘oomph’.  Sometimes they could use an earring jacket, also called earring enhancers.

This is an easy way to make earring jackets that will work with any earring post.

For the Simple Earring Jackets:

These are my favorites, simple pearl posts.

What you’ll need are bead caps.  I get them in the packages that have 3 different sizes.

Pliers are all that’s needed for this step.

Use the pliers to flatten the bead caps.

Once the bead cap is flattened, all you do is slip the earring post through the center hole in the bead cap.

To make the Hanging Earring Jackets:

You’ll need 2 sizes of flattened bead caps, Jump Rings, E-6000, Pearl beads, Beading Needle.

Open the jump ring, and slip the 2 sizes of flattened bead caps on to the jump ring.  Make sure that the front of the bead caps are facing the same way, so that when they lay flat, the front of the bead caps are right side up.

Close the jump ring to join the 2 flattened bead caps together.  Repeat for the second hanging earring jacket.

Insert the beading needle through the pearl.

Put a small drop of the E-6000 on to a plastic plate or lid.  (use plastic.  E-6000 will eat through Styrofoam)

Using the beading needle to hold the pearl, dab the pearl into the E-6000.

Place the pearl on to the flattened bottom bead cap with the hole facing up.  That way the hole isn’t as noticeable.

Remove the beading needle & let dry.  I usually wait for at least 24 hours before using the finished piece.  Repeat for the second hanging jacket.

When the earring jackets are completely dry, slip the earring post through the hole of the top half of the earring jacket.  That simple earring post doesn’t look so simple any more.

And if you have rhinestone earring posts?  Do the same thing as above, substituting a rhinestone for the pearl.  Use a QuickStik or Wax Stick to place the rhinestone.  To see how to make your own wax stick, go here.

You can change the entire look by adding different colored posts & rhinestones.
