When I was at the Dollar Tree, I spotted a section that had a few Mardi Gras decorations. I spotted a package of masks, beads & coins. They were colorful & shiny, but very plain. I needed to make them my own. Hmmm, a little glitter couldn’t hurt, could it? 😉
I gathered the supplies that I’d need to transform these plastic Mardi Gras Masks into something a little more lively.
A package of the Mardi Gras Masks (remove the elastic bands)
Since the masks come in purple, green & gold, I chose glitter in those 3 colors.
I used Tacky Glue instead of hot glue because the masks are plastic.
A paint brush (to paint the skewers & apply Tacky Glue)
Feathers in Purple, Green & Yellow
5 Bamboo Skewers
Green paint (I used green metallic)
First, I painted the bamboo skewers with green paint and set them aside to dry.
I started with the gold mask, and painted Tacky glue on the outside rim of it. Then I sprinkled on the gold glitter. I added gold glitter to the eyebrow area of the green mask, & gold glitter to the eye area of the purple mask (eyeliner). Set them aside to dry.
Then I went on the the green and then the purple masks.
I added green glitter to the outside of the green mask, the eyebrow area of the purple mask, and the ‘eyeliner’ area of the gold mask. Set aside to dry.
The purple glitter was added to the outside of the purple mask, the eyebrow area of the gold mask, and the eyeliner area of the green mask. Set aside to dry.
When all of the glitter has dried, decide where you’d like the skewers to go. You can use either left or right, straight or slanted. Turn over the masks and add a puddle of Tacky Glue and place the painted bamboo skewer into the glue.
Set them aside to dry. It takes a long time to dry when you’re using this much glue. The glue will turn clear when it’s dried. I propped up the skewers with the glitter jars to keep them in place.
Once the glue has dried, add some more glue to the dried glue & add some feathers. I matched the color of feather to the ‘eyeliner’.
To incorporate the masks into a centerpiece, you’ll want to put some floral foam into a colorful container. Place the masks in the foam the way it looks good to you.
I had some gold floral beaded sprays that I got on Christmas clearance that I took apart & used like moss to cover most of the foam. And I used floral pins to add Mardi Gras beads to cover what the gold sprays didn’t cover, and draping the beads on the outside of the container.
I got some Mardi Gras coins while I was at the Dollar Tree. I glued some toothpicks to the back of them with hot glue & inserted them into the front.
Using more of the The Dollar Tree Mardi Gras beads, I hot glued them to the top of the remaining bamboo skewers. Then I inserted them where I felt they looked best. Then I glued on some of the coins to cover the glue.
Using the Feather Sprays that I’d made in a previous post, I tucked them into the centerpiece to add filler where needed. To see how I made those, go to the tutorial here.
And the finished Mardi Gras Masks Centerpiece:
I can’t wait to use this in a tablescape!
