After Spring Cleaning the bathroom, I realized that I’m really sick of all of the turquoise in there. Once the walls were scrubbed, and everything was taken down, I got the bright idea that maybe the bathroom could use a color change. It’s been sitting for a month, with only the basics until I decided on what color I wanted. I finally chose silver & white, which is one of my favorite combinations.
The first project for the bathroom make over was replacing the towels. I’ve made a conscious effort this year to use up my fabric stash, as well as my crafting supplies. It’s been getting out of control over the years. I think of my craft room every time I hear the commercial, “Too much stuff, not enough space”.
You may remember my Christmas shopping haul, when I had a ball using up gift cards. I’d gotten some towels at Walmart, so I had them on hand.
Then I went to my fabric stash. I went with brocade.
I loved both sides, but I chose the matted side for the towels.
I started off by measuring the width of the towels to make sure I had enough fabric. Then I measured the fabric in different widths. 4″, 3″, and 2″.
Once I’d marked the fabric, I connected the dots. Once the lines were made, I cut out the strips of fabric that I would need to embellish the towels.
Next, I folded over 1/2″ along the long side of the fabric strips & pressed them into place. I repeated this on the other side of the strip. The I pressed a half inch under on one of the short ends.
Once the sides were pressed, I had to find the placement for the trim. The bath towels didn’t have a woven pattern in them, so I measured up 4″. The hand towels & wash cloths had a pattern, so I just used that to place the trim.
I pinned the pressed trim into place on all of the towels. Then I stitched the trim to the towels close to the edge.
The towels could have been finished at this point.
But once they were hung, you really couldn’t see that the ‘color’ was silver. I felt that they needed something else. I went through my ribbon stash & found some silver Offray ribbon.
Using the pressure foot as a guide, I added the silver ribbon. Then I repeated it on the other side of the brocade trim.
That was exactly what it needed to bring out the silver that I was looking for!
I’m very happy with the way they turned out. It’s amazing how a little fabric & some ribbon can change plain inexpensive towels into something that looks custom.
The more I looked at these, I thought that they’d make lovely gifts for a wedding shower or a house warming present. Oh the ideas I’m getting!
On to the shower curtain!
Happy Creating everyone!
