I needed some new earrings. Trying to find navy blue or grey earrings isn’t easy. So, I did what I usually do… I made my own.
I’m also fascinated with buttons, have been since I was a little girl & my Mama used to let me go through her button box. I’ve amassed quite a collection over the years, from yard sales, store sales, & friends. (You would not believe the will power that I have to use when I’m in Joann Fabrics). So, finding some buttons that were navy blue or grey was easy and making the earrings is easier than you might think.
Here’s how I turned a couple of buttons into some one of a kind earrings.
One container of my buttons, separated by color.
I picked out the buttons that I wanted to turn into earrings. I chose some that have shanks on the underside instead of buttons with holes. Then I removed the shanks. You could use a Button Shank Remover or a pair of wire cutters.
Some buttons have shanks that screw out! Now these are the easiest.
Shanks removed. If the shanks don’t cut off smoothly, use a nail file or some sand paper on the rough parts.
Then you’ll need some Earring Post Blanks. These are earring posts that have a flat end for attaching things to. They are very inexpensive & come in packages of several. You will need to purchase extra earring backs or use some you may already have.
Next, you’ll need some E-6000. This glue will hold your button on to the post blanks securely. Just dip the flat part of the earring blank into some of the E-6000 and place it on the back of the button.
Set it aside until the glue has dried completely. I usually wait for 24 hours.
And you don’t have to put the earring post blank in the center. I liked the way the square buttons looked when turned into a diamond shape, so I put the post on a corner.
That’s all there is to making your one of a kind, button earrings. Use your imagination & have fun with this project. There are so many wonderful buttons out there to choose from, whether they are fun, elegant, glittery, metal or buttons for the holidays. The possibilities are endless.
Happy Creating everyone!
