Craft Caddy

A while back, a friend of mine gave me a bag of empty Crystal Light containers.  I had a rough idea of what I wanted to do with them, but when the inspiration hit me, I surprised even myself.

I created a Craft Caddy!

Craft Caddy

I started off with a bunch of empty Crystal Light containers.  I played around with the placement.  4 of them, side by side are 8″ wide.  This was perfect for the space that I wanted the caddy to fit.  I used 10 containers for this project.

I got out the tools that I wanted to store in the Craft Caddy and marked the containers with a Sharpie.

Then I used the Sharpie to draw in the lines for cutting.

I used my craft scissors to cut out the opening.

Go slowly because the container will crack if you go too fast.

Craft Caddy

I do have to admit that my hand started to hurt by the time I was finished.

I used some nail polish remover & a cotton pad to remove any left over Sharpie.

Another friend had given me some Eyelet Lace, and this seemed to be the perfect project for it.  I applied a thick coat of Mod Podge to the bottom of the container & pressed the Eyelet Lace into it. (you don’t have to use Eyelet Lace.  You could use fabric or decorative paper)

For the taller ones in the back row, I added another row of Eyelet Lace, but this time I turned it upside down.

Then I added some ribbon to the area where the laces went together.  This was to fill in as well as hold down the unfinished edge.

Craft Caddy

I used one layer of the lace on the smaller containers.

Craft Caddy

I used hot glue to join the containers into rows. For the back row I used 4 containers glued back to back.

Craft Caddy

I added hot glue to the sides of the containers for the second row.  (3 this time,)

Then I put  glue on the back of the containers and pressed them against the first row.

Craft Caddy

I used a rubber band to hold the rows together while the glue cooled.

Craft Caddy

I added a third row of 3 containers to finish it off.  The back of the containers were cut to the lowest point of the previous row.

Craft Caddy

Because I knew that the caddy might be moved, I wanted it to be a little more stable than hot glue alone.  I put the glued containers on a sheet of foam board & traced around the entire thing.  Then using scissors & a razor, I cut out the shape just inside the outline.

I added a lot of hot glue to the cut out foam board, then pressed the caddy on to the hot glue.

It could have been finished at this point, but I started to look at the lid.

Craft Caddy

I thought it would make a good decoration for the Craft Caddy, so I added some iridescent lace to it with Mod Podge.  I sprinkled it with a little white iridescent glitter, (you know me & my glitter) then added some pearl trim to the inside edges.

I had a blue Cameo & decided to paint the blue part with white pearl acrylic paint.  Then I glued it to the center of the Crystal Light Lid. (this could work as a Christmas ornament, too)

Once the glue had dried, I added it to the center of the Craft Caddy.

The Craft Caddy was now finished and ready to be filled.

I like this so much, that I made a smaller version for all of my paint brushes.

I love the way they turned out.  And I’m thinking that this could be used for other things, like in the bathroom, at the makeup table, on your desk or in the kitchen.

Thank you so much, Pam & Hilda.  I couldn’t have made these without you.

Happy Creating everyone!
