Feather Sprays-Tutorial

I’m always looking for new ways to add color to my centerpieces.  One of the ways to add color, inexpensively, is to add feathers.  They not only add color, but they add movement to a piece.  They also make a nice addition to flowers as a filler.  By putting feathers together into a spray, you can add height to them.  Feather sprays are easy to make, and can be used in most centerpieces.  I’ll show you how:

Feather Sprays

You don’t need much in the way of supplies.  Thin wire (I used 26 gauge), some floral ‘paddle’ wire, wire cutters, floral tape, and feathers.  You’ll need 3 large/long feathers & 6 medium sized feathers for each spray.

Feather Sprays-Tutorial Supplies

I got this set of colored 26 gauge wire at Walmart.  It’s not necessary, as long as it’s thin wire, but I liked the colors.

Feather Sprays

I separated the feathers by sizes.

Feather Sprays

Once you’ve divided the feathers by size, take 3 large/longer feathers & wrap them together with the thin wire by twisting the wire around the feathers.  Twist the wire tight enough that they won’t fall out of the wire.

Feather Sprays

Then add 3 medium sized feathers to the front of the large feathers with the same wire, twisting as you go.

Feather Sprays

Repeat on the back of the large feathers with 3 more medium feathers, using the same wire, twisting together tightly.  Once all 9 of the feathers are gathered together with the wire, clip off the excess.

Feather Sprays

Cut off about 2 feet of the paddle wire.

Feather Sprays

Fold the wire in half.

Feather Sprays

Fold the wire in half again.  There will be 4 wires thick.

Feather Sprays

Wrap the wire around the cluster of feathers that you’ve already put together, at the bend of the wire, and twist a few times.

Feather Sprays

Continue to twist the wire together to form a stem.

Feather Sprays

Wrap the wire with floral tape from the top to the bottom.  Clip the ends to straighten it.

Feather Sprays

That’s all there is to making Feather Sprays.

Repeat the above steps for each feather spray that you need to make.

Feather Sprays

Try these in shades of pink for a little girl’s room, or white for a Shabby Chic look.  Blues or pinks for a baby shower?

You can use Feather Sprays to accent many areas.  Try pheasant feathers or peacock feathers for accenting areas of your home. (just lengthen the wire as needed)

Hope you have fun with this one.  I did.  I’ll be showing these in a centerpiece later on in the week.

Happy Creating everyone!
